The basics of VR360

VR360 (also called 360 video or spherical video) captures the entire environment around a single point — a full sphere, not just what's in front of the lens. Multiple ultra-wide cameras record overlapping footage simultaneously, and software stitches those feeds into one continuous, navigable panorama.

During playback, the viewer controls the camera angle by moving their phone, dragging with a mouse, or simply turning their head inside a VR headset. Nothing about the footage itself changes; you're just choosing which slice of the sphere to look at in the moment.

How 360 cameras capture the whole sphere

Most consumer 360 cameras use two ultra-wide, back-to-back fisheye lenses, each covering slightly more than a hemisphere. Onboard or companion-app software blends the overlapping regions into a seamless equirectangular video file, which is the flat, distorted-looking rectangle that gets mapped back onto a sphere at playback time.

Dedicated stereoscopic 360 rigs exist, but they're significantly more complex and expensive.

Live 360 streaming has become common for concerts and sports thanks to platforms like YouTube Live and Facebook 360, which support real-time equirectangular playback.
